ASSEMBLY: Building culturally rich theatre
The Blue Room Theatre’s 2018 giving campaign is raising funds for ASSEMBLY, a program to provide eight young artists from culturally diverse backgrounds with a year of in-depth engagement and professional development throughout 2019.
The Blue Room Theatre is dedicated to fostering new talent, providing platforms for new voices, and remaining on the cutting edge of what is contemporary and urgent about the world we live in. Diversity is an integral part of this purpose, so this year we are investing in the future of our young artists, and their access to the industry.
These artists aged 18 – 26 will be provided with tickets across The Blue Room Theatre’s three artistic programs, personalised mentorship in career and project development with practicing artists and organisations in Western Australia, and assistance with transport to and from the theatre. The campaign also seeks to employ a young, CALD / ATSI project coordinator to be mentored by The Blue Room Theatre staff and oversee the implementation of the program.
“I’m super excited that The Blue Room is going ahead with this program because it actually embeds an individual within an arts organisation like The Blue Room Theatre, which is such a key space for so many emerging artists within WA. Make it rain”
– Zainab Syed, Performing Lines WA
ASSEMBLY seeks to empower a generation of young artists to create theatre in Perth for years to come, whilst furthering the inclusivity of The Blue Room Theatre audience. By investing in these young artists, we are investing in the vitality and viability of The Blue Room Theatre as we continue to champion the now, the next, and the new.
This initiative also allows artists presenting at The Blue Room Theatre in 2019 to directly engage with, and give back to, emerging, culturally diverse artists, and look to how they can ensure diversity becomes or remains paramount to their own practice.
“We lived on a farm in rural India, and I would always go out to this hill and watch the sunset on my own, and I hadn’t remembered that memory for 10 years. You forget your past because there’s no way to express it”
– Zal Kanga-Parabia, Propel Youth Arts WA
