HELLO. KAYA. HOLA. JAMBO. MARHABA.
Summer Nights is The Blue Room Theatre’s curated program of theatre and performance, taking place as part of Western Australia’s biggest annual arts festival – FRINGE WORLD. In 2018, this runs from 27 January to 25 February.
With the aim of presenting high-quality, diverse and contemporary live events within the FRINGE WORLD environment, Summer Nights is our opportunity to showcase what’s next in independent performance, from our own backyard and around the world.
We are on the hunt for works that excite, inspire, and provoke to fill our venues for four wonderful weeks over the balmy Perth summer. Ambitious or intimate, hilarious or heartfelt, boundary-breaking, genre-defying, or tried and tested audience pleasers; we want to hear about them all.
In 2018, Summer Nights venues include our very own 49 and 60 seat black box theatres, as well as the resplendent 230 seat Studio Underground and a bespoke venue in the round at the State Theatre Centre of WA.
In addition, we welcome applications from works that sit outside traditional performances spaces; whether that be outdoors, rehearsal rooms, found spaces, lounge rooms, on the move, or
anywhere else. Perth is your playground, and we encourage you and our audiences to explore it all.
In 2017 we welcomed over 11,000 people through our doors and took home our sixth consecutive FRINGE WORLD Best Independent Program award. Over the past three years alone, Summer Nights artists and productions have taken home 26 art-form awards including three Martin Sims Awards (the top gong of FRINGE WORLD) and two each of Best Theatre, Best Comedy, Best Children’s Event, Arts Editor, Emerging Artist, and Blaz Award (for writing).
We look forward to hearing from you, and curating another incredible season of performance for Summer Nights 2018.

OUR 2018 PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS
THE BLUE ROOM THEATRE + STUDIO:
The Blue Room Theatre (60 capacity) and Studio (49 capacity) are intimate and flexible black box spaces. The Blue Room Theatre venues have been operational for 28 years and attract audiences who are willing to take risks, enjoy diversity in performance and champion innovation. The theatres are upstairs in our heritage-listed venue adjacent to an established bar which opens one hour before the first show and closes late. Drinks are cheap and audiences and artists alike hang around post-show to make the most of this wondrous time of year. Find out more.
STUDIO UNDERGROUND, STATE THEATRE CENTRE OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA: In 2018 The Blue Room Theatre and State Theatre Centre of Western Australia will partner to present a season of exceptional live performance in the Studio Underground as well as a bespoke venue for performances in the round. We are seeking proposals for high-quality, presentation-ready works that can sit alongside the best the world has to offer. The application process will ask producers to demonstrate that their work and/or company has received critical acclaim and is able to fill a high capacity theatre over several nights. More information here.
OUTDOOR EVENTS + AMAZING IDEAS THAT SIMPLY WON’T FIT IN A TRADITIONAL THEATRE: While most Summer Nights action takes place in our performance spaces, the streets of Perth during FRINGE WORLD are packed with hungry, festival-fit audiences. We want to hear from artists who plan on taking to the streets, rehearsals rooms, caravans or parks with their work, whatever format they may take. Liberated from four black walls, the boundaries of your performance are as limitless as your imagination. Reconsider your relationship with form and audience, and get down and dirty with Perth’s eccentricities. Immerse your work in our building, street, skyline, or neighbourhood; from our doorstep to the dunes, no idea is too big or too small. Find out more.
A NIGHT OF…: Ideas. Experiments. New works. Live art. Performance. Inspiration. Innovation. Rebellion. We are seeking applications from artists looking to present to an audience who are game to try something new. A Night of… provides a live presentation platform to support the sharing and testing of ideas, concepts, performances and inspirations for artists from all disciplines. Whether you create theatre, poetry, design, music, performance lectures, live art, comedy, puppetry or beyond, we want to hear from you. More information here.
MICROMOVE: We are seeking applications from dance artists and choreographers interested in creating a new piece of performance between 5 – 30 minutes long for presentation as part of MicroMove during Summer Nights 2018. MicroMove cedes the floor to movement, offers space to recreate and people to transform. It takes flight from a dance that is curious about journeying. Tethered in one world and reaching for another, travelling towards and away simultaneously. It connects through shared experience and memory. Find out more.
