The Wet Weather Ensemble
Fluttering hearts and beating wings, feathered friends and unfulfilled dreams. Here a boy is raised by birds and a woman who sings without any words. One Hit Wanda lives in a dishevelled one bedroom apartment with her one son and one hundred birds. Nightly she sings for her caged fans, blissfully reliving her former glory.
In this sea of seeds and beaks nests her son Nameless, all clawed and un-adored, all feathered and un-friended. But when Wanda performs her swansong, Nameless is free to discover what lies beyond the bird feed…
Inspired by the true story of a seven year old Russian boy who was discovered raised as a pet bird by his mother, Birdboy is a pecking order play about spreading your wings — even if you don’t have any.
Birdboy was developed in association with The Watermill Center Residency Program, WA Playwrights’ Development Initiative and Stages WA.
