Our fabulous producer Jenna Mathie has compiled a list to keep everyone happy this Christmas. Of course, Summer Nights FRINGE WORLD shows are a must have gift don’t you know? Below is a how-to guide on what to get for that buddy, work colleague, mum and dad, or that very special someone.
Why not buy a present for yourself of two tickets to 19 weeks? Then take a friend and enjoy an incredible evening dangling your feet in the pool at COMO The Treasury. This is a work for everyone, a work that encourages conversation, challenges fears and reminds us that we are all human. What could be better in a hot Perth summer then dangling your feet in a pool while seeing some of the best theatre in town.
Do you have a millennial in your life? Or someone who likes to critique and make fun of how ridiculous millennials are? Well, this is the show for them. A dark character sketch show about all the terrible people we know, love and probably sometimes are on social media. Get those millennials you know out from behind their computer screens and into the theatre. You won’t regret it.
Find The Lady
Your best mate Carl LOVED doing magic tricks in show and tell at primary school. Now he LOVES trying to pinch your wallet out of your pocket when you’re at the pub (but in a funny, not stealy kind of way). Find The Lady is a fantastical account of our storyteller stealing the gift of mind reading and the art of the con. There will even some real life mind reading happening right on stage! Best thing is, our storyteller doesn’t come off scot-free. So now maybe Carl will stop doing his funny “Where did your wallet go?” jokes at the pub. Just maybe.
Cousin Susan can never sit still at Christmas lunch, so why would you buy her tickets to the theatre? Lucky for Susan (and you), TOHU invites audiences to move around the space, or take a seat on the floor. This intimate, lyrical and mesmerising 30 minute dance work explores the universal behaviours of humankind. Add in paper boats and marbles, we think Susan will have a ripper time.
The Wind in the Underground
Grandma and Grandad have everything they want, so they’re super tricky to buy for. Also, shouldn’t we be focussing on buying experiences rather than gifts that in all likelihood just end up contributing to landfill? Oh hey, here’s a show that everyone will love! A heart-warming story of a brother returning home and family bonds that audiences of all ages will be able to see themselves and those they love in. But you know what would make Grandma and Grandad even happier? If you and your siblings went with them. Go on, make a night of it and give Grandma and Grandad the Fringe World experience they didn’t know they wanted, but they definitely need.
Slap and Tickle
The music lover you know is going to be spewing if you don’t snap up a ticket to Slap and Tickle! Featuring renowned musician iOTA and a 12 piece jazz orchestra, this is a show about a clown and a gimp that has more laughter, more confetti, and more talent than anything you’ve seen before. Get your music lover away from the pub bands and into the theatre. We have beers as well, and the music is going to be just as cracking!
So you accidentally gave your nieces and nephews the same present two years in a row and they didn’t like it either year. You want to be that cool aunt/uncle/god parents? Well then take them to the theatre! Josephine is an adventure for audiences of all ages. With pirates, ghosts and a healthy dash of magic, we think you’re going to be known as the gift-giver of choice after delighting those hard to please children with Josephine.
When Our Molecules Meet Again* Let’s Hope They Remember What To Do (*Probably In Space)
Does Uncle Bob love his theatre with a side of cosmic comedy whimsy DIY storytelling brilliance? Wow, we have a show that fits that perfectly! Stuart Bowden is a lo-fi theatrical genius, and this is his best show yet. With a little bit of strange, a whole lot of joy and a dash of music, Uncle Bob will leave the theatre with a full heart and tapping his toes.
For The Adventurer in your life. Winner of Best Comedy at the 2017 Festival, this is the perfect show for someone who loves to get involved and be surprised. Unlike anything The Adventurer has seen before, by the end of the show they will be crying with laughter and wondering how you will top it for the next present you buy them (spoiler, it will be hard to top).
That friend or family member who is a sci-fi lover is going to be very happy with their new tickets to The Yonder. Physical sci-fi comedy with a side of interrogating cultural identity and migration. Yes please! This is a show for anyone who loves the unknown, and loves to laugh.
