Throughout the year, The Blue Room Theatre presents three core seasons of performance – Summer Nights, our independently curated season presented as part of FRINGE WORLD Festival; Winter Nights, a mid-year festival of development, research and experimentation; and a Development Season supporting the creation and presentation of new work from April – December.
The Blue Room Theatre is constitutionally mandated to facilitate the development of self-initiated work by West Australian theatre artists. We do not individually produce the work presented at our venue, but rather we support artists in the production of their own work, and produce the overall programs that these presentations sit within.
We aim to be as fair and unbiased as possible in the programming of our seasons. To achieve this, we involve and delegate the decision making process to rotating panel of assessors. Development Seasons are programmed by a panel of peer assessors which changes every round; Winter Nights is programmed by a mix of independent assessors and staff; and Summer nights is programmed in house by our Executive Director, Producer and Associate Producer.
The Blue Room Theatre is an inclusive venue committed to the sharing of stories and the breaking of boundaries for artists and audiences alike. We strongly encourage applications to all our programs from and engaging artists who identify as Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and artists with a disability.
The schedule for application rounds and programming is outlined in upcoming dates is below. We go live to our members and artists with each upcoming program’s offer and information pack 4-6 weeks from the application due date, and we turn around a decision as quickly as we can so you’re not left hanging.
The Blue Room Theatre’s offerings have been disrupted due to Covid-19. Please standby for upcoming dates.
Our annual April – December Development Season is the cornerstone of The Blue Room Theatre’s artistic program. Each year, it sees around 14 independent new works offered unparalleled support from conception to presentation in our two black box theatre spaces for a series of three week seasons diverse in form, content, genre, artists and practice.
Summer Nights is The Blue Room Theatre’s curated program of theatre and performance presented as part of Western Australia’s biggest annual arts festival, FRINGE WORLD. It aims to showcase what’s next in independent performance – from our own backyard and around the world.
Winter Nights is a festival of theatrical experimentation in the middle of the year. We invite audiences to join in a process of discovery of the new, strange and exciting things bubbling away in theatre makers’ head and explore the big ideas at play in contemporary theatre and society.
