NAME: Gavin Roach // ROLE: Writer/Performer/Producer // SHOW: The Measure of a Man
What item can’t you live without in the rehearsal room?
Coffee. I know it’s a cliché but during rehearsals I usually start the session of with a large soy cap with one and then once that’s done, I find any excuse I can to sneak off and get a second….or third….
What’s the best show you’ve ever seen?
That would have to be Les Blancs at the National Theatre in London. Every element of the piece was thrilling – from the acting to the direction, to the incredible set, to the music. Everything kept me on the edge of my seat the whole show. I could have (and I wish I had) happily seen it again.
What was the first ever performance you were in?
It was a show in primary school called Run Away to the Circus. I played Leo the Lion, complete with homemade bath mat costume. It was a small role but I had a big song and dance number that I totally nailed….even I couldn’t (and still can’t) sing a note.
Why do you do what you do?
Cause it really irritates my mother….but that’s another story.
What excites you about Perth?
I love the changing face of Perth. I am a bit of an urban planning nerd and love to watch a city change and evolve. There’s always something new about Perth and I like that. And of course, the people as well. Performing in the fringe gives you the opportunity to meet so many new people/drinking buddies.
What’s your favourite thing about summer?
I like warm summer nights. Roof top bars with free flowing gin. Fresh seafood platters. And finding a summer boyfriend with reliable air conditioning.
What show/s are you looking forward to during Summer Nights or Fringe World?
I really love jumping in and seeing what Fringe World has to offer. I try not to plan too much and just take a chance on the night. I’ve got heaps of friends performing during the fringe too and am super keen to check out their shows, like Keira Daley’s LadyNerd 2: Game of Nerds….oh and then there’s Raelene Isbester’s Nigella – Love Bites. Ooooo AAAANNNDDDD Becky Lou in Real Women.
