We are a live performance venue. We have two theatres and a bar upstairs. We are also a membership organisation for theatre artists and we have two rehearsal rooms downstairs.

We co-present a core program called the Development Season between April – December, a massive FRINGE WORLD program in January/ February called Summer Nights which has won the Best Independent Program Award for seven years running, and Winter Nights, a two week mid-year festival of theatre research and development in late July.

Applications for the Development Season, Summer Nights and Winter Nights are called for once a year. The best way to find out when applications are open is to become a member, and you can check out key dates, information packs and  selection criteria on our website under ‘Apply‘.

We rarely have space available for hire of the performance venues. Our season shows occupy our performance spaces for nine months of the year; one month of the year is our Summer Nights program; and we also need to carry out maintenance of equipment and venues when we are dark. Our rehearsal rooms are available to hire for 11 months of the year but preference is given to performing arts-related hires. Our Front of House and Office Manager handles room hire at sally@blueroomorg.au.

The Blue Room Theatre is not a theatre company. The producing company of each show here is In charge of its own casting. If they call out for auditions we notify our members in our monthly bulletins. You can also find audition notices on theatre.asn.au, artshub.com.au and australianstage.com.au

The Blue Room Theatre started in 1986 (incorporated as the Performing Arts Centre Society) and we have been in this building since 1990 (initially trading as the WA Actor’s Centre). The Blue Room Theatre Seasons started in 1994. The foyer, bar and balcony were all new in 2006.

Originally it was the senior school building of Perth Central School, built in 1905. Then it was science labs, and from the 50s-80s Perth Technical College (TAFE). In the past we have shared the building with Kaos Theatre, Australian Society of Writers, the Photography Gallery of WA, and now Propel Youth Arts WA.
