A discussion about the journeys and experiences of artists who practice in Australia with other cultural backgrounds. They will talk about how their cultural heritage has shaped them as people, as women, and as artists.

What is your conversation about and what happens?

My Conversation, ‘Culture’ as ‘culture’, will explore how your upbringing in your family and community shapes you as an artist – how it changes your artistic process, how people see you, what’s important to you and what you make art about. We’ll explore the idea that ‘Culture’ becomes and begets ‘culture’.

How are you developing your conversation?

I’m approaching this conversation from an insider’s point of view. I have many shared experiences with my panellists, and this will help us dive deep into what it means to be a woman of colour making art in contemporary regional Australia.

What are you excited about in this project, and what are you hoping to get out of it?

I’m so excited that regional women of colour are leading this conversation. So often our narrative is written for us by purveyors of our experience, by outsiders observing us, but we are telling our own story here. I hope this sparks more people like us to do the same and take control of their narrative.

What are you exploring?

I’m exploring how the backgrounds and lives of regional women of colour inform their artistic practice. I think it’s an important time for more such women to be owning their narrative and talking about themselves, rather than being talked about. We want to lead our own discussion!

What will we experience?

Our audience will hear the direct, personal experiences of three very different artists, whose experiences are probably very different from those in the audience. They’ll get a window into a world they might not know, and gain new perspectives on how others see and interact with the world.

Who are you talking too?

I am developing and researching this conversation solo, however my panellists include Alexia Parenzee and Charmaine Green, both of Geraldton.
