Emma Valente is the Co-Artistic Director of THE RABBLE, a group of visionary women who have consistently produced bold, provocative and visually stunning theatrical experiences. The company has forged an unrivalled reputation for producing experimental theatre of the highest quality – theatre that interrogates the human condition through a combination of surreal and visceral aesthetics, a feminist sensibility, and the application of intellectually rigorous research.

Every Winter Nights, The Blue Room Theatre proudly hosts a nationally renowned guest artist to deliver professional development opportunities for local artists. Previously Daniel Schlusser and Van Badham, Emma is our 2020 ~virtual~ guest artist, coronavirus be damned.

Just ahead of Winter Nights, Emma will facilitate a week-long workshop intensive online with ten of Perth’s performance-makers to introduce them to a range of material generation techniques to develop their own performance ideas and methodologies. On Tuesday 11 August, she will join a live zoom to engage in a facilitated conversation and Q&A to discuss her pathway and practice with THE RABBLE and as a freelance director, dramaturg and lighting designer. The conversation will explore THE RABBLE’S reaction to the conservatism that dominates our stages, their improvisational methodology and the re-imagination of iconic, familiar stories with female voices and aesthetics.

THE RABBLE boasts an impressive performance history, having been commissioned by Melbourne Festival, Arts House, Malthouse Theatre, Belvoir Theatre, MTC, Theatre Works, The Substation, Vitalstatistix, Dublin Fringe Festival and Castlemaine State Festival. They have also toured to Wuzhen Festival (China), Brisbane Festival, Dark MOFO and Carriageworks. The results have changed the paradigm of what is possible in theatrical culture in Australia.
