My Family in Palestine – Lana Kalis’ Exhibition Statement

Perth-based Palestinian Artist reveals life in British Mandate Palestine in first-time exhibition this weekend
A new exhibition exploring themes of family, cultural erasure, ethnic cleansing and resilience opens on Friday at the Blue Room Theatre for one afternoon only.
Lana Kalis is an emerging artist whose family is from Jerusalem. She uses mixed media to bring together historic family photos with traditional cross-stitch techniques. For one afternoon only, this exhibition explores themes of family, cultural erasure, ethnic cleansing and resilience.
By sharing candid photographs of intimate family moments, Lana’s exhibition invites you to go back to a rarely seen snapshot of life in pre-partition Palestine the 1940s. To sit, have a coffee and spend time with the people from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River.
Lana said she was compelled to represent and honour her family story through this residency at The Blue Room Theatre.
“This exhibition provides a glimpse of the freedom that we once enjoyed,” she said.
“All people from the historic land of Palestine deserve to live with freedom and dignity, free from fascism.”
