Nagini – The Serpent Legend

Website & Facebook Event Images Template4

Myth, transformation, queer divinity

The Nagini is the serpentine deity on a journey of transformation. Guided by spirits of queerness, femininity and diasporic wisdom, Nagini learns survival strategies and spiritual technologies. Ultimately, she must shed colonial identities and colonial oppression to be reborn regal. An immersive and physical meditation on femininity, queer aesthetics and the meeting of cultures, Nagini is a speculation on the power of resilience and cultural wisdom. Drawing on Indonesian and Indian heritage, Danisa the Serpent leads a synthesis of intergenerational and intercultural voices from the fashion, drag, live art, traditional movement and music worlds. Nagini is a majestic and contemporary reimagining of classical South Asian mythologies.

What excites you the most about this project and what are you hoping to get out of your residency?

I’m excited to create my first long-form work, expanding it into a fully-realised narrative. Working with an incredible team, and with more resources we will deepen our interpretation of the myth’s concepts. I also look forward to cultural research, enriching the piece with South Asian traditions and building a strong cultural foundation.

What will be the focus of your residency and what are the themes, concepts, or methods you are interested in exploring through your work?

The focus of this residency is explore the themes, conventions and techniques of foreign lands, colonialism, queer bodies, dynamic relationships, and diasporic politics. This team will synthesise cultural forms of movement, music, costuming, and theatre to build a recontextualised mythology that weaves tradition with contemporary expression.
