Artist Statement:
On behalf of the cast and creatives of WALK, we are incredibly excited to share this work with The Blue Room Theatre community! It is a show all members have poured their heart and souls into, and after 2 years of covid lockdowns and cancellations, we acknowledge the immense privilege it is to be putting on work at this time.
WALK was always intended to be a solo work, created and performed by formidable performance artist, Bobby Russell. In order to adapt with the changing climate during the covid outbreak, and an increased responsibility to care for our team, we decided to bring independent artist and dancer, Shuling Wong (OFF-BASE DANCE), in as WALK’s swing performer.
The decision to include Shu as a swing performer as opposed to a traditional understudy (i.e., performing only if Bobby became sick/injured), was easy to make. Shu is an accomplished dancer and freelancer, having worked across Australia and internationally, and the opportunity to have her perform was one we couldn’t pass up.
For two nights of the show’s run (22 & 23 July), Blue Room audiences will have the opportunity to witness Shu’s take on WALK’s score. As long term friends and collaborators, both Bobby and Shu are eager to offer this additional aspect to the work, and we as a team feel this is a prime opportunity to embrace better covid practices, whilst also opening the work to more artists and collaboration.
