Solving For X

15 - 27 July

Residency

X’s have followed them for years and now is the time to solve the mystery. Solving for X is a semi-autobiographical exploration of living between the known and unknown. Male and Female. Black and White. Figuring out who you are is hard enough, but it’s even harder when there are unknown quantities. Time for Reese to investigate and then see how they feel about the answer.

What will be the focus of your residency and what are the themes, concepts, or methods you are interested in exploring through your work?

Solving For X will look at identity in the modern age, how the past impacts the present, and how society pressures people to define themselves in a way others approve of. The intersectionality between identities that combine together encapsulate (or attempts to encapsulate) a whole person. The team will work to translate personal experience into a theatrical and accessible form, navigating the intimate and uncomfortable. We are excited to explore audio-visual elements and how to convert spoken word storytelling into text.

What excites you the most about this project and what are you hoping to get out of your residency?

Reese is keen to share a story close to their heart, mind, and soul. They seek to develop their writing skills and develop their skills assessing a work whilst being the one in performance. Trusted collaborators Donita and Parker are also excited to be working with personal storytelling and converting that into text. Donita is seeking to develop her dramturgical skills also, furthering skills learnt as a writer and director. Parker’s writing skills lie largely in the realms of comedy and drama, and consulting to support someone else’s individual stories is a something he is seeking to further work on.
