In this edition of In Conversation, we shine a light on Hyperfantasia—a new dance-theatre piece by Enneagon Movement, showing at The Blue Room Theatre from 27 to 31 May. Hyperfantasia is a live silent film, celebrating the daring flapper women who embraced freedom and femininity in a world where their voices were muted. Confront the past and connect with the present through a hypnotic dance between light and shadow. We caught up with Giorgia & Minni, Co-Choreographers & Performers, to dive into the creative process behind the work and what audiences can expect from this thrilling new production.

What motivated you to apply to be part of The Blue Room Theatre’s 2025 season, and what drew you to this project?

This work was already in development, with an ambitious vision of creating a live black-and-white silent film experience. The Blue Room felt like the perfect venue—its transformable space and intimate atmosphere suited our 1920s aesthetic. We also value the support and creative freedom The Blue Room offers, making it the ideal place to bring this vision to life and reach new audiences.

How has the creative journey been so far—from concept development to rehearsals?

The journey has been surprisingly seamless. Over the past 18 months, the piece has evolved naturally, with each development phase revealing something new. This final stage has allowed us to take creative risks, especially with the freedom The Blue Room provides, and we’re thrilled with the direction it’s taken.

How has the collaboration with your cast, crew, and creatives shaped the work and your vision for it?

This version of the work is our most collaborative yet. Working with Amy, our vocalist, has added incredible richness and soul. Our set and lighting designers, Nikita and Matt, have been instrumental in achieving our vision of a live greyscale world—bringing the illusion of a black-and-white film to life. Every collaborator has brought their expertise and creativity, shaping the work in meaningful ways.

What does having your show programmed in The Blue Room Season mean to you as a lead creative?

It’s a huge milestone for us as a collective. We’re proud that The Blue Room believed in our vision and are honoured to be part of a program that champions such strong, diverse work—especially as a dance piece amongst a theatre season.

As you move closer to opening, what are you most excited—or even nervous—about sharing with audiences?

We’re most excited to see our full vision come to life! As all the theatrical elements are so crucial to the delivery of the show, we are so excited to see how that translates in the theatre, and we hope audiences will be immediately drawn into this world. We’re eager to connect with new viewers and to see if this next iteration opens up future opportunities!

What is your show bringing to the Perth arts scene, and what do you think would help strengthen the local arts ecosystem?

Enneagon Movement strives to create accessible, entertaining yet unique contemporary dance – something that is often misunderstood due to its abstract nature. To strengthen the local arts scene, we believe in making work that’s engaging, thought-provoking and inclusive for all kinds of audiences, not just fellow artists—bridging entertainment with meaning, and ensuring the arts remain relevant, supported, and alive!
